No combat. No fail states. Your Luminids grow through what they experience, the bonds they form and the places they learn to call home. Read the full explanation of how it plays . **What kind of game is Luminids?** Luminids is a cozy colony-building sandbox that blends colony simulation, world-building and first-person exploration. You raise, lower and carve the land, place structures and paths around the terrain, and give the colony real work to do: farming, fishing, cooking, mining and crafting. **How is Luminids different from other colony sims?** You influence the colony rather than manage it. You shape the world and set intent, and the Luminids decide what to do about it. There is no order queue, no unit selection and no survival pressure: no enemies, no raids, no timers, and no colonist can die or leave. Farming, fishing, cooking, mining and crafting still matter, but not as an economy to optimise. Two things are unusual. You can step into first person and walk the world you shaped from above, so you are building a place to stand in, not a layout. And the Luminids become individuals: their quirks are earned through what they do, and you read them by how they behave, not by bars. Read how Luminids compares to other cozy colony sims . **Does Luminids have combat?** No. There are no enemies, no hostile creatures, no player health and no combat system. It is not an idle game, though. You are shaping land, building, farming, exploring an island of nine realms and finding things that are genuinely hidden. **What platforms will Luminids be available on?** Luminids is coming to PC via Steam, launching on Windows with macOS planned. Wishlist Luminids on Steam to get notified. **What are the Luminids?** Luminids are the small, round, luminous creatures the game is named after. They are colony members, not units you command. You shape the world and they respond to it: they gather, build, farm, rest, play, and form opinions about each other. You can read their moods without opening a menu. **What makes each Luminid different?** Each Luminid develops through the life it actually lives. Quirks are earned through experience rather than assigned at spawn. Luminids form bonds, develop preferences and carry important experiences forward. Two creatures can respond differently because they have lived different lives and do not necessarily know the same things. The goal is simple: you should learn who a Luminid is by living with it, not by reading a stat sheet. **Is Luminids single-player or multiplayer?** Both. Luminids plays as a single-player game and also supports online co-op for 1 to 4 players, so you and up to three friends can share an island, build a colony and explore it together. There is no combat and no competition, so co-op is purely cooperative: you are shaping the same world side by side. **Can my Luminids die?** No. No Luminid can die, leave, or be permanently lost, from hunger, cold, accident, or neglect. A hungry Luminid will come and find you, chirp, and pat its tummy; if you keep ignoring it, it dims, slows down and sits. That is the entire consequence. Read more about why there are no fail states . **Can you lose in Luminids?** No. There is no failure state, no game over screen, and no run you can lose. You can put the game down for twenty minutes and come back to a colony that is fine. This is a deliberate design position rather than an easy difficulty setting. **How big is the world in Luminids?** Luminids takes place on a single island roughly four kilometres by five, with nine distinct realms on it. Everything you can see from your camp you can actually walk to, and there is no loading between regions. We wrote about why we chose one island over an infinite world . **Is Luminids on Steam?** Yes. Luminids is on Steam for PC. You can wishlist Luminids on Steam to follow development and get notified about release updates. ### Gameplay & Features **How does the core gameplay loop work?** The loop is a cycle between two views of the same world: planning from above and living in it in first person. Shape the world: From above, raise, lower and carve the land, and lay paths that follow the ground. Build: Place structures, mark out where the colony should grow and give it real work: farming, fishing, cooking, mining and crafting. Live and explore inside it: Step into first person, walk the paths you drew and meet the Luminids at eye level. See how the colony responds: You do not command the Luminids. They decide how to live in what you made, earning quirks and forming bonds as they go. There is no XP. A Luminid can reach an arc called Becoming through three earned quirks, one deep bond and a contribution to a real build for the colony. Discover more: Head out across one island of nine realms and recover the sanctuary fragments that let the colony rebuild the Ark, piece by piece. Shape again: Take what you noticed at ground level back to the planning view and reshape the place around how the colony actually lives. **Can you play Luminids in first person?** Yes. Luminids lets you plan from above, then step into first person to walk through the same spaces at ground level. The perspective shift is central to the game because it turns your colony from a layout into a place you can visit. **What biomes are in Luminids?** The island has nine realms: Plains Meadow, Temperate Grove, Highlands Mountains, Tundra Alpine, Desert Rim, Desert Badlands, Volcanic Highlands, Coast Beach, and Ocean Shallows. Each is built to be identifiable from its light and colour alone, without the interface and without looking like a filter dropped over the same terrain. **Does Luminids have a story or campaign?** Yes. There is a prologue that introduces Astra, your first companion, and a longer campaign built around recovering sanctuary fragments and rebuilding the Ark. The Ark is assembled piece by piece by your own colony, in front of you, and lights up further as it grows, so you can read your campaign progress from across the meadow without opening a menu. **Is there farming and crafting in Luminids?** Yes. Farming, fishing, cooking, mining and crafting all exist and matter, and the larder genuinely drains. Farming also gradually graduates to the colony: once the story witnesses your first planted field the Luminids start watering it, later they replant it, and eventually they take over the harvest entirely. You never lose the ability to do any of it yourself. **How do I interact with my Luminids?** You are a landscaper and a neighbour, not a manager. You shape the land, place structures and mark out where you want the colony to grow, and the Luminids decide how to live in it. In first person you meet them at eye level. A hungry Luminid will come and find you, and if you help, it remembers that you did. Trust shows in behaviour rather than a bar: over time a creature stops backing away when you approach and starts coming to meet you. ### Technical & Development **When will Luminids be released?** Luminids is in active development, with Early Access planned for February 2027 on PC via Steam. Wishlist Luminids on Steam for release updates and Early Access news. **What engine is Luminids built in?** Luminids is built in Godot 4, using Jolt for physics. We write about the technical side regularly in the dev log , including a profiling post about a single line of code that cost us a second of frame time . **Will Luminids run on Steam Deck?** Steam Deck is an explicit performance target for us, but we have not verified it yet and we will not claim it until we have. Performance on lower-end hardware is currently our largest open project: a recent playtest showed a significant share of testers on older graphics cards, and nobody had a completely stall-free session. We would rather fix that than promise it early. **Is there a Luminids demo or playtest?** There is a playtest. You can request access from the Luminids Steam page using the Request Access button. Any wider demo or beta would be announced through Steam, Discord and the dev log. **Is Luminids free?** No, Luminids will be a paid game. Pricing will be announced closer to Early Access. Wishlist Luminids on Steam to be notified when it goes live. **Will Luminids come to Mac or consoles?** Windows is the launch platform, with macOS planned. Console versions are not announced and would be decided after Early Access based on demand and how the game runs. **What are the system requirements?** Specific system requirements will be announced closer to release. Performance on older and lower-end hardware is a major focus right now, and we write about that work in the dev log . **Will Luminids support mods?** Modding is still being explored and is not promised. We will say more about it once we know what we can commit to. ### Community & Support **How can I stay updated on development?** Follow us on social media, join our Discord community, and wishlist Luminids on Steam . We regularly share development updates, concept art, and behind-the-scenes content about our game development and new features. **Can I provide feedback during development?** Absolutely. We value community input and regularly engage with players through Discord, social media, and our development blog. Your feedback helps shape the final game. ## Approved Screenshots - Colony Campfire (Colony): https://luminids.com/images/media/screen30.webp — The colony gathered at camp in daylight, with the lake and the terraced hills of the plains behind them. - Meet Astra (Creatures): https://luminids.com/images/media/screen20.webp — A first-person meeting with Astra, showing the companion name, mood, and care prompt in context. - Night Gathering (Creatures): https://luminids.com/images/media/screen31.webp — A night-time line-up in first person: mossy, mushroom-capped, frosted and ember-bright, every Luminid its own shape. - First Light (Atmosphere): https://luminids.com/images/media/screen26.webp — A quiet sunrise over open water, with haze, drifting fireflies, and no interface in the way. - Astra and Tansy (Creatures): https://luminids.com/images/media/screen32.webp — Astra and Tansy in a sunlit temple hall, one of the old places waiting to be found on the island. - Desert Oasis (World): https://luminids.com/images/media/screen24.webp — A dry-biome shot showing palms, water, and far-off ruins for biome variety. - The Star Rudder (Story): https://luminids.com/images/media/screen33.webp — Astra at the temple: "The Star Rudder.
